Keep an eye on the Phoenix Suns as they try to set a new NBA record. Phoenix is 14-0 on the road against Eastern Conference teams this season and a win against the 76ers on Wednesday would make the Suns the first team to sweep its road games against the opposite conference.
UPDATE: Shawn Marion and Boris Diaw sat out this game and the Suns simply could not pull it together to set the record against the 76ers. I could not watch the game but been reading about it and it sounds like the Suns just didn’t have it tonight. In the words of Coach D’Antoni we just ran out of luck tonight
.
Tonight marks a new phase in Mexican and American soccer, when both teams face each other here in Arizona. It is a new phase due to the coaching changes both teams made after the World Cup, but also because it is the start for a new generation of players to make their presence known in their country’s National team.
The game is at University of Phoenix Stadium here in Glendale. I have not been able to see the stadium first hand although I have seen just about every tv show made about it. We are going with several guys from our soccer team, even getting a little early to do some tailgating before the game kicks off. Univision and ESPN2 are both television the game which has been sold out for a few days now.
update: the final score does not really reflect what went on inside the field. Both teams seemed a little unsettled, playing the game with more strength than skill and letting scoring opportunities go (especially Mexico!). We had great seats, just a few rows up from the pitch. There were a lot more American supporters than one would’ve imagined for a Mexico game on the west coast, overall there were about 63,000 in attendance supporting their colors.
So Mexico did not look all that great and once again the speed of the American’s was a factor, especially up front with Donovan creating dangerous opportunities with his runs. Mexico created a lot of opportunities and once would say they dominated the game. However, possession time does not win games and the US put away the chances they had — by the way, what a great assist by the ref on the second goal. We’ll see what Hugo brings to the table once his teaching/learning process starts to sit in with the players. For now, it was great to be able to watch these two teams in our backyard.
After their showcase on national television, the Suns went to Minnesota and could not answer Kevin Garnett’s scoring in the final minutes of the game. The Wolves beat the Suns 121-112. The current winning streak ends at 17 wins in a row, one short of having the perfect month. They now come home to face San Antonio and Utah before going back on the road.
The best team in the NBA this year, the Phoenix Suns, will not have a starter in the Western All-Star team despite Steve Nash having another MVP-quality season and Amare Stoudemire having a great season. The fans voted the starters which include Kobe Bryant and Tracy McGrady which I would argue are not having a better season than Nash.
On the positive side, coach D’Antoni was selected to coach the Western division all stars validating the great work the coaching staff have done over the last few years. All of this as the Suns surpass the Dallas Mavs for the best record in the league and attempting to win their 16th game in a row, twice this season, against the Bucks
I know anytime players are selected for these kind of positions by fans, the results are not going to be true to reality but its frustrating to see the Suns not be rewarded for their hard work. A lot of people are fans of the NBA once again because of the Suns and the fun they bring back to the game, count me as a member of such club. Since Yao is hurt, the Commissioner will select his replacement and hopefully Nash or Stoudemire will be rewarded even though both of them will most likely go as reserves anyway.
update: the Suns defeated the Bucks and have now own 16 games in a row and remain the club with the best record in the league. Their last game of the current road trip extravaganza is Sunday against the Cavs on national television. Don’t miss the game on ABC at 1pm ET.
The Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts have made their reservations for Miami to play in the XLI Super Bowl. The Bears beat the New Orleans Saints 39-14 in the NFC Championship game, while the Colts finally got past the New England Patriots 38-34 in the AFC Championship game.
The Bears - Colts game really does not sound all that great since I am not a fan of the Colts and it is hard to rally behind Rex Grossman not knowing which version will show up to the game. Best play of the day had to be Reggie Bush’s catch and run for a touchdown, specially with that move he made on the sideline to get past the Bear’s last man.
So who is it going to win? I would like to see Chicago win it but Indi has been very consistent on both sides of the ball so I could see them being favorites by a few points.
