20Jan06 Researching The Great Depression
Last weekend while we watched Cinderella Man Sarah and I both asked to each other the same question: how did the US get to that point? I guess I’ve never really researched this point in time of the history of this country. I know the high level details such as the stock market crash but I wonder about the deeper issues of this period. If you are aware of a good reference book(s) that shed some light into the Great Depression I would greatly appreciate your suggestions.
Just in case you were wondering, we really liked the movie although it is not one of those that you watch when you want to relax and have an early evening, specially a couple of nights before you run a long race.

We watched it when it first came out and we thought it was an excellent movie too. Russell Crowe does a phenomenal job. I am not too sure on the cause fo the crash of the market really but then again it goes down and up so often I don’t think we can really pinpoint it. One of the big things is that they did not have FDIC back then so the banks could not cover all the sudden withdrawals people were making.

I remember an Economic professor at UNR tell the class that the US economy was already in decline before the stock market crash, and that market crash just exasperated the country’s economic woes. He went on to state that government missteps through fical and monetary policies( both pre and post stock market crash) is what lead the country into the depression. Although he was more of a laissez-faire economist which would probably bias his statements. Sorry no good Economics books to point you towards, but I have found some facinating books on Endodontics!

We actually have a US History for Dummies book at home that has a chapter on the Great Depression. I’ll check it out over the next few days and see what it has to say.
I would agree with both of you that a phenomenon of this magnitude does not Just Happen™ from one day to the next. I think this only adds to my curiosity about the times
