HOA Secretary

At 7:00pm the meeting was called to order… yes that’s right, I am practicing for my new role. I was voted/elected/cornered into volunteering as the Secretary of our HOA Board of Directors. What does that mean? not exactly sure at this time but right away I get to work the laptop that creates the magnetic cards because you know about that computer stuff.

The last couple of meetings that I have been to have been rather entertaining to say the least so I hope that I can bring some balance and a touch of reality to the mix. To get started on the right foot, the property owners have been asking for a community website to improve communication, so I might have to get involved with that in the next few months as time allows us to work on this project.

Other recommendations for the board? how about locking the entrance gate at 11:00pm because someone forced it open during the night. genious, I know!

Our annual homage to the soccer gods

Not sure why we do it but we have managed to survive another soccer tournament this past weekend. Our team is certainly not in top shape, we’ve never been, but we always come together when it counts. We had two games on Saturday and two more on Sunday. We lost one game to one of the top teams in our league and we lost to our league’s champions on Sunday’s semifinal match. On the good side, we beat a team from New Mexico and the Scottsdale league champs to earn our pass to the semifinal.

Add an evening of cocktails on Saturday night to celebrate a friend’s last days as a bachelor and you can see how things get a bit, mmm, dehydrated?. First time I have been out until 2 o’clock since Arizona changed that law and I could feel it Sunday morning. Sunday night we went out to dinner to celebrate Cesar’s birthday and we were all beat, asking ourselves why we still do this. The answer? just to prove that we still can.

A gift from Dotster

I received the following email today from my domain registrar Dotster.

Thanks to our great relationship with the .info registry, we were able to secure the .info version of many of your .com domains absolutely free.

We’ve added these domain names to your current Dotster account for you to manage in any way you see fit. Rest assured, these names are NOT set to auto-renew. They are yours to use for an entire year with no catch.

I have to enable the domain and point it to this site but what a nice treat it is. However, at the current prices for domain names, it feels more like a marketing campaign than a sign of good nature.

New toys from Apple

Coverage from Apple’s MacWorld will be all over the web for the next few days. Today, Apple introduced the Mac mini and the Ipod shuffle. It is usually the case that as soon as one buys a computer, specially an Apple, they announce an upgrade that makes your 2-day-old machine basically obsolete.

I wish Apple would’ve made this announcement prior to the holiday season for two reasons. My sister gave my brother-in-law an MP3 player for Christmas but the Ipod shuffle + iTunes combination would’ve been perfect for him. Also, over the holidays, I was telling my dad how perfect a Mac would be for his hobbies: music, photography, poetry and anything that involves all three. He was sold on the idea until we discussed the pricing. Before I came home, his mother board finally gave up and ended up buying a Dell. He would’ve put his order for a Mac mini without thinking twice about it. Steve Jobs was speaking to my dad when he said We want to price this Mac so that people thinking of switching will have no more excuses.

A quick trip to the Apple store might be in order over the next few weeks to check out the new toys first hand. Would I trade my powerbook and 20GB Ipod? Absolutely not but it still fun to check out new toys.

Changing CVS properties

I recently had to change the ip address for our server which contains our CVS repository. In reality, it was more than just an address change since I migrated the repository to different server but the transition went very smoothly. However, I wast a bit worried when I noticed that a couple of Eclipse projects had code that I failed to check in before I moved the repository and I was not sure how things were going to work.

Fortunately Eclipse handled the change very nice both with open and closed projects. I noticed that I could change the repository’s ip address and the path through the CVS perspective and each repository’s properties window. I was surprised to see how well Eclipse propagated the changes throughout my open projects. I had a coupe of closed projects which were not updated at the same time but I was able to easily make the appropriate changes once I opened the projects.

However, that was on the windows machine I use at work. Tonight, I tried to make the changes on my Powerbook and I found a little obstacle. Once I confirm the fact that I want to change my repository, I get a "progress information window" and the "confirm project sharing changes" just like I had before, however, I am not able to click the ok button to continue with the change.

Check out the following image for an idea on what is going on. The button appears to be selected but I cannot get to it. Any ideas?
