28Sep05 ASU-USC Weekend
The hottest ticket in town for this weekend is the ASU-USC football game and Sun Devil stadium is nearly sold out, despite being a 12:30pm game. Two of the most powerful offenses in the game are attracting a lot of attention, to the point that ESPN decided to come to Tempe for its College GameDay show. Yes, defense might win championships but offense brings people to the game.
Given that we don’t have any tickets today, Sarah has to work that afternoon and we are doing our long run (10 miles) earlier that morning, I think I will be watching the game on ABC and from the comfort of my couch. Of course, I will be wearing my gold and maroon!
update: USC won 38-28 and will remain the #1 team in the country for yet another week. Three quarters are not good enough to beat USC, even they were had an off night, as ASU found out today. The game was much closer than the final 10 point difference would lead you to believe but close is not enough. It was an entertaining game despite neither team playing to their full potential.

Okay, when I read this I had to make a comment due to someone having to stand up for the few defensive minded people out there. As this seems to be an ongoing argument between “Bullocks” and myself, I figured I would make a public statement to this subject once again.
Typical comment made by someone a part of the typical society we live in, and this, to make it worse, is made soon after you made the entry of us having to be reminded of the real reason behind sport???? Reference to the earlier entry of the basketball girl. I didn’t know that the real reason behind sport was to bring people to the game, I thought it was to play and first of all have fun but also the sense of competition? Do you mean to tell me that you cannot show this if there is no one in the stands watching you? Would you still play if no one was watching?
Take for instance your wide receivers. When they score a touchdown they make this big show to the crowd as if to say I did this, I accomplished this. All the freaking guy had to do was catch the stupid ball, how difficult is that? Nevermind the quarter back that threw the ball 50 yards on the dime avoiding the defenders and putting it right in the receivers stride! Nevermind the offensive line who defended to give the QB the time to throw the ball. Nevermind the Defense who held the other team to no points, or turned the ball over so that the offense can score the points.
It is like business really, the workers at the bottom work hard to make the CEO look good and take the glory. Then you wonder why soccer doesn’t make it here in the US….not enough goals!!!!! So in saying all this, I hope that the game ends up being a low scoring game with field goals only!

By the way, what are the colors USC wears ????????

I agree on all counts! Going along with your anology, I also believe that the QB, the offensive linemen and even the other wide receivers all play an importnant part in scoring a touchdown. I also agree that the defense is just as important when it comes to winning a game.
The point I was trying to make was how much attention a scoring team can make. Do you think Texas Tech is getting the attention they have these last few years because of their location? no, it is because they are a media producer dream come true by scoring 40+ points just about every game.
And by the way, I am not typical member of the typical society. I certainly appreciate a good clash of defenses as long as there is action. What I don’t appreciate are slow games where nobody is shinning, neither the offense nor defense.
USC’s colors are cardinal and gold while ASU is maroon and gold.

Cardinal and Gold as apposed to Maroon and Gold is close enough. Crumbs you could wear the colors and keep your mouth shut the whole game and whoever wins say you were supporting them.
Just like Man U when they all of a sudden won the league and Champs league now everyone is supporting them. I wonder what will happen in about 5 years when neither Man U not Real Madrid when anything, if they will have the same support.
I am agreeing with you on the fact that offense brings in the media and draws more crowds believe me I can see that, but I am arguing the fact that it is wrong as the focus of the sport is missing or has gone away. Look at the NFL last season for instance. Who got the most media and who gave the most entertainment during the season causing the most hype…..The Colts, why because you had Manning throwing the ball hundreds of yards every game and scoring major points every game…..but…..how did they fair against the Patriots, known to be one of the best defensive teams out there, ahhh think they may have scored A touchdown if that as I recall (which I may be wrong on but I know they didn’t score much).
And who ended up winning the whole enchilada…..the defensive team of the season! Now they are talking about the Colts being a contender because of their defense not their offense….I am saying I agree with you but once again the focus of sport has moved to money and entertainment, not to be on winning or being champions….the kwaam!

the kwaam? Should I start calling you Rod Tidwell?

Its not fair to USC to classify them as ONE of the strongest offensives in footbal, because they are THE strongest offensive team! Make sure you have a box of kleenex! I’ll be wearing my cardinal and gold tomorrow!
Fight on!
P.S.
I know for a fact that the USC football team has the superior mouthguards!

Hey Daron! Well they certainly did not look like THE strongest offensive team this weekend. I think the refs worked harder than the O-line in the first half with all of those penalties.
I thought it was a good game, not great but entertaining. The door was open but ASU just could not get it done. They played the second half trying not too lose and couldn’t handle White.
