4Jun05 Sprint, where is the love?
I have been a Sprint customer for a long time, probably far longer that most cell phone customers would stay with one company these days. When we moved to Phoenix, despite having many alternatives available I decided to stay with Sprint and Sarah also joined the network then. I’ve always had a very good experience with Sprint but I understand this is not the case for everyone. However, I think their service is reliable and their coverage meets my needs at home and in the rare occasion when I get to travel.
As happy as I might be today, I am starting to lose the love for my cell phone company. Love, is a two way street and I feel my relationship with Sprint has become a very one-sided dark alley. For Sarah’s birthday I wanted to get her a new smartphone she’s been wanting to have for work. I thought that I could upgrade mine as well (I still have my original phone) and maybe get a better deal. We’ve been talking about the Treo 650 and this was the perfect opportunity for us to upgrade. I went into a couple of Sprint stores and asked them if I could get a couple of accessories for free if I bought two of these handsets at the same time. We are talking a $80 – $100 investment from Sprint, when I was ready to make a $1300 investment (less than 8%). You would’ve thought I was asking for buy one phone, get the other one free or something along those lines. I was promptly denied my request at both stores.
What was even more surprising was the fact that at one of those stores, the sales rep flat out told me to go to Costco and get the phones there. He also told me that I would get the accessories that I wanted if I bought both handsets. He knew so because he used to work there before moving to the retail location. I found this to be incredible. Basically I go to a Sprint store and they tell me that they cannot help a loyal customer but if I go to a third party, they will be more than glad to please the customer – AMAZING.
I ended up buying just one handset and my love for Sprint has become more like a friendship now. Next time I am asked about Sprint I may not be such a great reference for them, especially since they have not shown a lot of loyalty for their most loyal customers.
