Explaining content syndication

I currently volunteer for my fraternity’s chapter by helping them run the chapter website, which is also used by alumni to get in touch with each other. As any other fraternity, we have a national office which publishes information about events, news, and other bits of information for all chapters across the country.

We have a quarterly magazine or journal which publishes articles of interest as well as news items regarding other members. In addition to this journal, the National office sends monthly emails letting us know what is going on. Why do I bring this up? well because most recently I had an email exchange with the Director of Communications for our National office, asking him if they had any plans to syndicate their content.

My request is based in the fact that today, I am the person that has to navigate to the National website or any other place where they may publish their content, get some text of interest from this source and create the appropriate content in our own website. I only bring an article or an event to the attention of our visitors and I provide links to the original source as a sign of courtesy. However, this process is time consuming and I usually forget to make the rounds collections these pieces of information to supplement our own site. I would like to automate this process as much as possible without increased the workload on either one of us. Syndication technologies allow for this automation to take place and provides a win-win situation for all of us.

However, I realized that the person I was communicating with did not have a picture of what I was referring to. Requesting the raw text (through a feed) without any formatting appeared to be a strange request, without very much value. I offered to put something together that would allow him to get a better idea about what syndication can do for the National office, as well as for raising the level of content that can be offered to the local chapters.

So I am now looking for some resources that would allow me to introduce the idea of content syndication and its benefits to someone who is fresh to the idea. So far I have found a couple of quality documents, Mark Nottingham’s RSS Tutorial for Content Publishers and Webmasters and FeedBurner’s FAQ About RSS.

Happy Summer Solstice

What could be better than temperatures over 110F to mark the official start of season? Nothing says summer like the desert heat! As Greta said on a previous comment, this is when we need to remember how perfect the weather is the rest of the year.

While talking about summer, we have made plans for a couple of trips in August to visit friends and family in Texas and Oregon. We’ll be going back to Amarillo during the first week in August so let me know if you will be around. Also, Clinton and Sash will be coming to visit us during the 4th of July weekend which will be a lot of fun. A little golf, some shopping and just letting loose will be the order of the day during their visit. I think we are all certainly ready for that.

Linda and Dwight arrived today to spend a few days with us. We are extremely thankful for their visit and looking forward to a lot of fun over the next few days. So our summer plans are underway, what are you doing during your summer?

Scottsdale ArtWalk

We met a couple of friends for dinner and we had plans to get to Scottsdale’s ArtWalk. Dinner was so great that we only had a few minutes to walk around a few of the art galleries that were still open. I took a couple of photos but we’ll definitely be back in the near future.

The Scottsdale Gallery Association’s signature Scottsdale ArtWalks are a 30-year tradition. Unique in their scope and longevity, they are held every Thursday evening, year-round (except Thanksgiving) from 7-9 pm. Each week, Scottsdale Gallery Association members host special exhibits – many with artist receptions – and join together for an informal come-and-go “open house” throughout the district. Casual and eclectic, it’s a great time to visit the galleries and learn about featured artists

When things go from bad to worse

It never fails, when things are not going well they only get worse. At the office, we were without any email for the majority of the day due to a trojan/worm taking over our Exchange cluster, one server at a time! Eventually, the servers were back up and the data was fully restored. I wonder to what extend was the University affected by this outage which lasted the majority of the working day?

If that wasn’t bad enough for us, as soon as emails were starting to come in, we started receiving the messages that we queued for delivery. It appears students were not able to view their classes due to a server failure. The central IT department failed to notify us until we made an inquiry with the help desk and even then we weren’t fully aware of the situation or a timeline of events.

It appears our video server was damaged by the same worm that affected our email cluster and a few other servers around campus. Microsoft was brought in because they were not aware of the worm that caused the damage, so this could’ve been a 0-day vulnerability. Things are still being digested and documented so I expect to hear more about the events after the weekend.

We received the following email from the University’s Chief Information Officer, so at least we know all resources were spent on taking care of the situation.

Early Thursday morning the Exchange servers were compromised. Just after 3am the hacker(s) started with EX0 and proceeded to all the exchange servers. The cause of the outage appears to be a new worm/virus that Microsoft isn’t aware of since our systems had the latest Microsoft patches. It also appears the attack was protocol based and not a password compromise. No data was lost or compromised.
