FBR Open weekend

The PGA tour was in town this weekend with the FBR Open over at the TPC Scottsdale. Saturday I went to the tournament with a couple of friends who had a spare ticket so how could I say no to that. We spent the day on the famous 16th Hole. I have heard of the craziness that goes on this hole and they are all true. Fans lose control and either cheer or boo every singe player, anything further than a couple of feet from the cup and you will hear people booing the player. Good enough to hit the stick and you become a crowd favorite. Wave to the fans on your way to the green and you are on heaven!

The 7,000 fans gathered around the whole were waiting for one person only. It was crazy when Phil made his way through the tunnel leading into the tee box and although his tee shot was on the bunker, he managed to put this 12 foot in the cup to save his par. Saturday was a record crowd with more than 165,000 people attending the event and everything was crazy. Not a bad day for my first ever PGA experience.

Sunday, Sarah and I went to see the final round courtesy of her employer and although it was no corporate tent access or anything of the sort, we had a great time. What could be better than watching the top PGA golfers from just a few feet away while enjoying the great Arizona weather? The list would be quite small that’s for sure.

We walked around for a little while just catching some of the action across different holes. We went back to 16th but it was jammed and most likely impossible to find a couple of seats on the stands. On a different hole, we watched Vijay Singh tee off from just a few feet away. After a little while, we walked back to the 18th to catch the top groups wrap up their round.

Needless to say, the best moment of the day was seeing Phil (yes, us locals are allowed to call him by first name!) finish off with a 26-foot birdie putt from the fringe. This is after an amazing tee shot which was one of the longest drives that we saw during the day. We saw a lot of great shots over the day but that putt was something incredible. We’ll certainly be back next year and we welcome anyone who wants to join us (hint hint Clinton!).
