9Dec04 Maradona Retrospective
A friend of mine recently sent me a link to FOX Sport’s recent photo gallery, Diego Maradona Retrospective where they take a look back at his life from his superstar days to today while dealing with his drug addiction. In 2000, Maradona was recognized as one of the two greatest players of the 20th century.
I was able to see him play during the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and there are no words to describe his talent and skill. It is sad to see his health decline to this point but I will always remember him as the #10 that dribbled his way around six England defenders to score one of the best, if not THE best , goals in history (video).

Like I said to you before Okie, I think he was a great player and I believe he scored probably the greatest goal in soccer, questionable when you compare it to the one Owen scored against the Argentines (understandable from a Liverpool supporter, even though he is a Galactico now, once a Red always a Red!). But, I don’t believe he is THE best when compared with Pele. I still believe Pele was and is still the best player the soccer world has ever seen. You not only have to compare the time difference of when they played, but also what Pele did to revolutinize the game. I believe more people will make the reponse of knowing who Pele was, even if they only know he played soccer and was rated the best in the world, than to know who Maradona was. People will probably get him and Madonna mixed up! I know this does not have much to do with the actual game, but one must also look at who reprents the great game better too, between the admirable Pele, and the recovering cocaine addict Maradona, who is almost unrecognizable in the pics you are showing. I wish and hope he recovers and gets back to as close a reasonable shape as possible one day. He was a great talent and was a good example to set for the smaller sized player, that you don’t have to be the sought after, prototype, 6 foot, weighing 200+ pounds player to be successful in this sport like others believe.

Owen who? ;o)
I agree that Pele has done more for the game, both while he was playing and since his retirement, than Maradona has. I would imagine this is the eternal argument among soccer fans and there are arguments to be made for both sides. I grew up watching Diego and thus I "idolized" him during my younger years.
As I grew up and learned more about the game, I also learned about Pele and I was able to appreciate him as a player and as an ambassador for the game. Today my vote would be for Pele but Diego has provided a lot of good memories.
Maybe we I should’ve posted our emails back and forth after you sent me that link. It would’ve been quicker for both of us than to type these comments!!! But thanks for visiting and commenting.

The little guy who proved to everyone that it could be done! That is who OWEN is!!!!! Yes I know he has left the wonderful world of the Kop,but I am still a fan, as I am with all Liverpool players, current, ex, transferred or retired. I am thinking the same thing in just copying and pasting our emails in as the comments as they are pretty much the same comments made. I will have to agree though that Maradona has given us many memories, such as the goal against England, and I will also have to admit to him being the greatest player while I was growing up, but now that I have seen some of Pele’s stuff, I will have to give him my vote.

Hello Octavio and Clinton,
First of all I send you all the best and many greetings from Argentina.
Second, even though the article i would like to comment on is old i would like to give you a recent update about the 10.
In the last year o so Diego has had a lots of ups and downs. or better said more downs than ups.
He lives in Cuba and tries to solve his drug and alcohol addictions. He came back to Argentina in december 2004 to see one of his daughters graduation party. Although he has been in rehap noboy saw a recuperation of his health. he still carries around too many kilos. many say that he is trying to kill himself with his attitude and his life style. There are many examples of his weird behaviour. It would take me too long to list all of them.
I will not give any opinion about who is the better player.
saludos from the Buenos Aires
