Jump starting the economy, one store at a time

I am not sure on the NYSE or the NASDAQ numbers for today but I can personally say that I have done my share to improve this country’s economy just these last couple of days. Checked the credit card, added an address as an authorized shipping address, two malls and a few stores later I am almost done with my Christmas shopping.

It is not that I’ve started early but actually, as many other guys out there, I am doing it last minute since I am going home first thing Saturday morning so that only left me with a couple of days to take care of my list. Funny how you can go into a store, pull out your list, check off a couple of items from such list and look so organized. To the point that the person helping you at the register notices and let’s you know - oh look at you! how organized. Not sure if it was a compliment or if she was mocking me, I’ll take the first one.

I know many people out there don’t believe in Christmas mostly because of the over-commercialization of such holiday. I can understand their point of view, however, I still enjoy seeing my nephew’s face lit up as he unwraps all presents (not just his!) and be the happiest kid in the whole world. Putting commerce out of the picture, it seems this is the one season where mostly everyone is a happy mood, they are a little more patient and even more understanding of others. If people don’t like this season because it is over-commercialized, I guess they must’ve received pretty bad presents while they were kids!!! I hope you are having a great holiday season thus far.

  1. Well I must admit I am kind of one to say that this season is somewhat commercialized in the sense though that “some” people merely only focus on buying presents and decorating, and not the true meaning behind Christmas. The other thing that gets me is that just like on Father’s day or Mother’s day or the others, why is it only on those days that we are special to them, why not always? Similarly, why are we not always friendly and nice, not just during this season? Just a little concern I have, but in the end I will agree with you that people are friendly and patient out there, and that this is a great holiday where people are giving and receiving. There is definately not much better than to see someone open a gift and get excited about it, especiallt when it comes to little kids. It is said though that if we as adults, well some of us can claim to be, would look at this world through the eyes and mind of a child, this world would be a better place!
Happy Holidays to everyone and have a Merry, Blessed Christmas! May the New Year bring you more joy and success than this one!

  2. I think a point that I failed to make was people who dislike Christmas just because it is a commercialized holiday. Doing so would be just as shallow as those people that only think of this season as a gift-exchanging season and nothing else.

I like the happy medium, one where you celebrate the birth of Jesus, celebrate your faith, celebrate the relationships with friends and family and you take part in the magic of giving someone else a little happiness in the form of a gift.

Thank you for the holiday wishes, may 2005 be one filled with happy memories for you and your loved ones.

  3. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Cozy and Sarah (en aan jou Meneer Hollingworth! Moenie te hartseer wees op Kersdag nie. Verlang verskriklik aan jou!). Over-Commercialised or not - I just adore this time of year and the festive season. Sending all my love to you guys, I will certainly be thinking of and praying for you on Christmas Day!

  4. I have to agree with you Okie, combine all everyday and this world will be a better place (sounds cliched but it is definately true in the end). Merry Christmas to everyone. Skat, ek mis jou baie, baie, en hopelik sal ek jou volgende jaar sien. Liefde vir die familie and geniet die tyd met hulle. As jy nie omgee nie sal jy a drikkie vir my ma en pa gee?
