Debate season starts tomorrow

Debate seal image

We are just weeks away from the November election or what is being called "the most important election of recent times". The first debate will take place tomorrow evening from the University of Miami. Arizona State University will be the host for the third presidential debate on October 13th and will focus on domestic policy.

Regardless of the CBS News issues that have crop up lately, Bob Schieffer has been chosen to moderate the final episode of the ultimate "reality" tv series.

Bob Schieffer, one of broadcast journalism’s most experienced Washington reporters, will moderate the third and final debate at Arizona State University on October 13. On August 13, 2004, the Committee on Presidential Debates announced moderators for the three presidential and one vice presidential debates.
The Arizona debate will focus on domestic policy. The debate format calls for the moderator and candidates to be seated together at a table.
Schieffer has been anchor and moderator of FACE THE NATION, CBS News’ Sunday public affairs broadcast, since May 1991. He also serves as CBS News’ chief Washington correspondent.

No phishing

This morning I read yet another article about a new phishing scam and decided to post some notes I had written up in the past. From the article:

A phishing scam that appeared Thursday claiming to help protect consumers against debit-card fraud and identity theft has experts worried about the increasing skill and creativity of online scammers."

What is phishing?

"Phishing" attacks use spoofed e-mails and fraudulent websites designed to fool individual into divulging personal data such as credit card numbers, account usernames and passwords, social security numbers, etc.

How to protect your information?

The following are just some guidelines that I follow to best protect my personal information.

  1. Do not provide personal information in response to an unsolicited request, either through the phone or the internet.
  2. If the request from a financial institution or organization appears to be valid, contact them directly for further confirmation.
  3. Never provide a password online or over the telephone.
  4. Regularly monitor acounts for suspicious transactions.
  5. Do not use links provided in a suspicious email.
  6. Surf the internet responsibly.
  7. Maintain all computer software up to date.

Visit the Anti-Phishing Working Group website for more information.

I need a mentor

  • someone that I can learn from
  • someone that I can understand
  • someone that understands me
  • someone that can show me my weaknesses even if I see them as strengths
  • someone that I can look up to

Needless to say, I am speaking with regards to my professional career.

Summer ends tonight

Not because a calendar marks the end of the season or the because temperatures are not reaching as high as they did last week but because Big Brother and The Amazing Race both end tonight. Now, that is the end of the summer.

update: Drew has won the half a million dollars by beating "Cowboy" by one vote (4-3). This season will not go down as one of my favorites but it was good to see Drew win it at the end. Now, we’ll see who will win the best reality show in TV – The Amazing Race.

update II: Chip and Kim have won the million dollars as the winners from this year’s Amazing Race. It is good to see good people win any contest, specially $1M, but I just hate the way they played the last few legs of the game. My vote was with Collin & Christie and their "crazy" driver!

The Great Unraveling by Paul Krugman

Without wanting to take a side on today’s American political scene, we will be attending a lecture by Mr. Krugman tomorrow evening presented by Arizona State University.

Unlike most political commentators,  Krugman really knows a great deal about what he “rants” about, particularly when the topic is economics.  He’s more than just a journalist – he’s a distinguished professor of economics at Princeton University and ranked as one of the world’s top international economists by The Economist magazine.

What is "The Great Unraveling"? It is the title to Mr. Krugman’s latest book where he presents his theories as to why the US has lost its way in the economic and political arenas and "recommends a road map for getting the country back on track."
