Apache Trail

Superstition Mountains

Sarah and I made a quick trip over the weekend. The photos from our visit to Arizona’s Apache Trail are available in the photo section of the site.

The trip was rather a quick since it is a short scenic route. However, the day was gorgeous and it was great to just put the car’s top down and get out for a couple of hours.

The Apache Trail covers the towns of Goldfield and Tortilla Flat. Other than the great views, the highlight of the trip was getting our picture taken old-time-style. I’ll scan the photo in the next few days.

I you would like to know more about Goldfield and Tortilla Flat here is some more information. Definetely worth a drive up there and with some luck, maybe a quick splash into Apache Lake.

The first points of interest are Goldfield, supposedly a ghost town but now rather commercialised, and then the Lost Dutchman State Park – this has information about the varied stories and legends associated with the Mountains, and in particular about the Lost Dutchman Mine which was supposedly a tremendously rich gold mine worked by a lone prospector but its location was lost upon his death.

Tortilla Flat (population 6!) has various ancient mining and agricultural relics, and an interesting curio shop decorated with mementos from the many visitors who have passed through over the years.
