Back to school?

I have been pondering with this question for the last few days, you may be asking why? A few days ago, I was offered the opportunity to join a new program my employer is launching.

The school would cover most of my academic expenses as part of our employee benefits package. The school is delivering a fast-track, trimester based program that will take more or less 2 years to complete. The program is focused for professional engineers that are interested in a management/excutive/leadership track within the technology industry. In order to prepare these “scientists”, the program includes 12 hours (4 classes) from the very respected W.P Carey School of Business.

As tempting as this offer does sound, I am actually thinking about it quite carefully. I know that I will have to completely commit myself for 2 years – give or take – in order to do well in this program. Coming from a University which did not have the bleeding-edge computer science program means that I will have to put extra effort to make sure that I can keep afloat and current with other students. I am also not in the “field” and thus, I lack the experience that daily hands-on training provides. I have been doing computer work for quite a while and I would consider myself quite knowledgeable in the field of web related technologies. However, it is quite different to be dealing with “embedded systems” which is the technology focus of the program I looking into.

There were a couple of road blocks that would’ve kept me from joining the program and those were taken care of today with the help and support from a faculty member that is part of the program. Now, all I have to do is make the commitment. Maybe this was the reason that I was supposed to be working at this school? I don’t know how or why but I am grateful for the opportunity.
