We survived New York

Just a quick note to let everyone know that we are back home in NoSco after 4 incredible days in "The Big Apple." We have plenty of photos (about 500 altogether) and stories to share (for some you just had to be there), so expect more about our trip in the next few days.

Merriam-Webster Word of the Year

Merriam-Webster released its annual top ten word list based on online lookups on their website. This year’s #1 word?

MS enters blogging arena

According to an eWeek article Microsoft will release its own blogging service in the near future.

Microsoft’s MSN division is expected to take the wraps off of its MSN Spaces blogging service this week, according to sources close to the company.

MSN is expected to tout MSN Spaces as a direct competitor to blog creation and hosting tools such as Blogger, Blog*Spot, LiveJournal and TypePad. Microsoft also will position MSN Spaces as a way to allow users to more easily share photo albums and music lists, insiders said.

Knowing how Microsoft works this was to be expected sooner rather than later, especially since blogs have received a lot of media attention these last few months and companies are starting to integrate them into their communication and marketing strategies. There is a lot of potential left in this technology and they are hoping to tap some of that.

The one point of the article that I foud interesting was the integration of the service with their own IM client – MSN Messenger 7. This was something that I was looking into a couple of weeks ago but more along the lines of integrating MovableType and Jabber. The idea has not made it past just being that. However, I will keep an eye on this topic, mostly to see how people will put to work this combination of very popular technologies.

Installing SP2 at home

It is almost midnight and just now finished installing SP2 on the other laptop. I didn’t mind the installation time at work but we are talking about a dual-processor machine with 1GB of RAM. Not quite the same experience when you are dealing with a 1 GHz processor with 256Mb of memory

Why did I take this long to upgrade? Mostly because I wanted to make sure things were going along smoothly with this service pack. I installed it at work a few weeks back and have not had any problems with it. The development applications that I run there have not been affected in any sort of way so I thought we are safe to bring the Fujitsu laptop up to par.

I think a RAM upgrade would be quite appropriate for that machine, specially since Sarah constantly multi-tasks with more than one Office application, so I am sure she would enjoy the extra little bump in performance 512 Mb of RAM would give her.

update: wireless is up and running without any further modifications but I need to re-patch the OS so non-MS themes are accepted. Tomorrow’s testing includes VPN functionality, keep you fingers crossed. Good night.

Thank you Mr. Walton

Getting ready for our trip I wanted to get a headphone splitter so we could watch a movie on the plane or listen to the iPod at the same time with the comfort of having our own headphones. In any case, the only model available at Best Buy (I know, I know) was a Belkin (# F8V234-GLD-APL) splitter that featured 24k gold-plated contacts and according to the sales person, it was the best thing since sliced bread. This beauty was priced at just $9.99 plus tax.

A short walk to the other side of the mall and you will find Wal-Mart where you will find a Belkin (#F8V234-WHT) splitter. Fair enough, no gold plated connections but I am sure our finely tuned ears will not miss a beat. How much? the Belkin site lists this model at $4.99 but since we are at Wal-Mart, instead of getting the nice white one, we get a black one for just $2.99. Thank you Sam Walton!

ps – since we saved some money on that splitter, I splurged and bought a spare battery for the camera in case we need a quick recharge in the middle of the day.
