9Jul03 Barca sign Mexico defender.
For everyone who says that Mexico does not produce world class players, take this! I don’t want to hear that anymore.
MADRID, July 9 (Reuters) – Mexican international centre back Rafael Marquez said he would do everything possible to bring trophies to Barcelona after joining the Catalan club from French first division side Monaco on Wednesday.
Marquez, who has signed a four-year deal with Barcelona, will fill the gap left vacant after the departure of 33-year-old Dutch defender Frank de Boer.
‘I will be doing everything I can to help the club win titles,’ said Marquez during his presentation to the media after completing the five million euros ($5.67 million) move.
‘I hope that my arrival will be the start of a successful period for the club.’
Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain told the assembled media at the Nou Camp that Marquez was exactly the sort of player the club needed.
‘His arrival is the guarantee of good football,’ he said. ‘He is a class defender and has the ability to play the ball out from the back which suits Barca’s style of play.’
The 24-year-old is the second signing to arrive at Barca since Joan Laporta was elected as club president last month.
Laporta’s first new recruit was Turkey goalkeeper Rustu Recber, who joined on a free transfer from Fenerbahce.
